Daughter meets the Man who Killed her Mother in a Road Traffic Collision
Sophia is the daughter of a lady who was killed by Adam whilst speeding on the wrong side of the road.
She felt she could not move on until she had met him. Her Victim Liaison Officer referred her to our service and after an initial meeting she was certain she wanted to meet the Adam in a face to face meeting. We contacted the Adams probation officer in Prison, who arranged for us to meet with him. Our initial meeting with Adam was positive and although he was very nervous, he wanted very much to help in any way he could. With the support of his probation officer, we met several more times with each party and finally arranged a Conference date, to be held in the Prison. We took Sophia for a visit to the Prison a couple of days before the Conference so that she knew what to expect on the day.
The Conference itself was very moving, with both parties only in their mid 20’s, full of concern for each other. They both spoke openly about the events on that day and both learned new information that helped to give context to what they had previously known. Sophia brought in a book to give to Adam for him to read whilst in Prison, with an inscription inside it. By the end of the Conference Sophia and Adam were laughing with each other. Adam said he was very glad to have had the opportunity to take part and that he did not want to leave the room at the end of the meeting. Sophia asked David if thought his mum would meet with her. He immediately said he thought that would be very welcome as his mum cries every day. Sophia asked us if we could arrange this meeting and we agreed to try.
We met with Graham and Alice, Adam’s parents who were living with a great deal of guilt. Adam is their only son and they felt the weight of his actions reflected on them directly. They both agreed to meet with Sophia and we were able to facilitate a very emotional but very positive meeting between the three.
